Chapter 6

Fluffy flecks of whiteness continued to fall from the darkening sky. As they drifted, the force of the escalating wind plucked them up and tossed them about to form never-ending dancing spirals that effortlessly brushed over the surfaces of rocks, and from time to time surged through the light grey branches of the trees. The animal skins were insufficient protection against the elements and the large Hominid sensed that before the warm weather returned, many of their number would die. It was his duty to lead them to the shelter of the cave but they had strayed far away in search of sustenance and the cold had come quickly and caught them unprepared. He had endured spells when the elements had turned against them before. He vaguely remembered constructing a kind of shelter using the branches snatched from the trees the previous time the elements had expressed their anger, but the flimsy structure had proven inadequate and blown away. Of course he’d seen hundreds of fallen sticks in the past but just then, as he toyed with one in particular it had rekindled a memory. He took hold of one end with his free hand and slid it over and over the surface of his clenched fist until he felt the skin burn and throb with the heat. It was all so familiar. He was certain there was something about the stick but the icy fingers that slowly penetrated his body returned him to his senses. He needed to go back to the group or he would be the next one to die. As he relaxed his grip, the stick, that a moment ago had promised so much, fell softly to the ground.
